Built out of the old FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Soccer City has emerged as the primary stadium for the 2010 World Cup and hosts the opening and closing matches. The largest stadium in Africa at 94,700, the importance of this stadium stretches far beyond football much as the World Cup it hosts will as well. The iconic post-apartheid 1995 Rugby World Cup final was held here, as well as Nelson Mandela's first speech after his release from prison.

The stands in Soccer City are articulated by ten black vertical lines; nine are aligned geographically with the nine other stadia involved in the 2010 World Cup, and a tenth line is aimed at Berlin's Olympic Stadium, which hosted the previous World Cup final in 2006.

Soccer City's history as a football stadium may not be particularly rich, but Africa's first World Cup should change that rather quickly.
