Brazil as a country is synonymous with football. So it's only fitting that the Estadio do Maracana is owned by the Rio De Janeiro State Government and opened in 1950 specifically to host the World Cup, built against a breathtaking backdrop of the Rio skyline. The estimated attendance at the final of that tournament? 210,000. We'll give you a minute to pick up your jaw up off the ground.
Fittingly, the Maracana has been home to some of Brazilian football's most staggering of achievements, with Pele scoring his 1,000th career goal at the stadium while Zico scored a total of 333 in the Maracana itself, a record that still stands.
The stadium has since been rebuilt to an all-seater capacity of 82,238 and is being renovated again for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games.
